In an achievement reminiscent of Garry Sobers, Yurraj Singh has hit six sixes in an over to launch India a step closer to the semi finals of the Twenty20 world championship semi finals.
England’s Stuart Broad was the recipient, as a mix of wayward deliveries and superb cross bat hitting took Singh from 14 at the start of the nineteenth over, to 50 at the end of it. The half century scored off a record low 12 balls.
India were always in line for a high score when Virender Sehwag (68 off 52) and Gautam Gambhir (58 off 41) dispatched England’s bowling to all points of the Kingsmead ground.
Yuvraj entered at 3/155 with 20 balls left. His innings of 58 off 16 balls remarkably started with a dot ball, before a stunning eleven ball burst, which included six 6s, three 4s, two 1s.
His six 6s came off Stuart Broad, with the hapless English quick finishing with 0/60 off his four overs.
England chased the unlikely winning target of 219 with vigour. Darren Maddy was first to go at 1/53 in the 6th over. A steady stream of wickets kept England slightly behind schedule, eventually ending their 20 overs short by 18 runs.
Vikram Solanki top scoring with 41, Kevin Pietersen adding 39.
India will need to beat South Africa in their final super eights match to qualify for the final four, while England go home winless in the super eights. Their only win for the tournament was against Bangladesh.
