No Willie fight for Barry Hall

Sydney Swans full-forward Barry Hall will not be taking part in a proposed fight with NRL bad boy Willie Mason, with the Swans quickly pouring cold water on the idea.

Boxing promoter Angelo Hyder floated the idea, suggesting he was willing to pay the footballers a six-figure sum each for a bout in early 2008. Mason is believed to have been given the all clear by clubs he is currently negotiating with, however the Swans have no intention of risking their marquee full-forward.

“Barry Hall is a footballer contracted to the Sydney Swans and while there may be some talk in the media of him fighting, Barry has informed the Club that he has no intention of seeking to pursue a boxing career whilst he is contracted to the Swans,” Swans general manager Andrew Ireland said.

Hyder said a bout between two of football’s most engaging stars would have ‘packed out the Sydney Entertainment Centre’.
