Widders to fight charge

The NRL has given official notification that South Sydney forward Dean Widders will contest his charge of contrary conduct against Manly on Monday night.

The charge stemmed from a ‘crusher’ tackle on Jamie Lyon in the 41st minute of the game, won 24-18 by Souths. By contesting, Widders risks a three week suspension, which would ban him until the second week of the finals, if the Rabbitohs were to progress that far. A guilty plea would have resulted in a two week suspension.

Dragons prop Jason Ryles and Tigers lock Liam Fulton will also fight similar charges. Ryles is risking a two man ban, while Fulton will be suspended for one match if found guilty. Fulton would have avoided a ban had he entered an early guilty plea.

Widders will be first up at tonights judiciary at 6pm, with Ryles’ hearing scheduled for 6.45pm. Fulton’s case will be heard at 7.30pm.
