Why is Johns story big in AFL states?

Andrew Johns

Rugby League’s week has been so gut wrenching that even the southern states have taken notice.

Rugby League made the front page of the Herald Sun. Rugby League broke into the AFL Footy Show. If the story wasn’t so shocking, league could be proud of the inroads it had made in the southern culture.

Which makes you wonder, why is Andrew Johns such a big story down here?

It’s been quite the season for AFL. One if it’s shining lights escaped to America in disgrace, the coach of a club admitted he had players that are, or had been, ‘regular’ users, while stolen documents suggesting several players at another club had tested positive to illicit substances.

A fair backyard to look after.

Sure, the issue of drugs is a red hot discussion point, so any player is a magnet, but could it possibly be that in the midst of an epidemic in AFL, the insular side of this southern culture is taking pride that another sport is falling?

In the ocean of hysteria, the height of hypocrisy was depicted with a cartoon, illustrating a league player running on to a pass, but handed tablets instead of a football. The picture was cleverly titled ‘Drugby’.

Pot, kettle, you know the rest.

Having been in Melbourne for the Storm game, it was obvious that more people were talking league now than ever before. Almost seems to be a gleefulness to the conversation. Fondness that other sports can suffer a similar fate. Johns’ staggering admission of using substances during the majority of his career, including straight after games, was far more exhaustive than anything uncovered in AFL, therefore according to some simple minded people, somehow makes rugby league more parlous.

Can’t wait for the Ben Cousins tell-all.
