The turbulent week for Wayne Carey continues, with his second media employer, Channel Nine, announcing they will not renew their contract with the former premiership player amid accusations he ‘glassed’ his girlfriend in the United States.
Carey was charged by Miami police in October after allegedly smashing a wine glass in girlfriend Kate Neilson’s face. He is due to face a Florida court in mid-February.
The charge can carry a jail term of up to 15 years.
A day after Melbourne radio station 3AW announced they would not be renewing Carey’s contract, Nine ended their association with the former Kangaroos and Adelaide Crows player.
“That contract expired at the end of last season and while negotiations had commenced for a new contract,” GTV (Channel Nine Melbourne) managing director Jeffrey Browne said in a statement read on Today Show.
“Nine has now terminated those negotiations.”
Carey was charged with assaulting a public servant, resisting an officer with violence, as well as aggravated battery. The incident occurred at the luxury Mandarin Oriental Hotel, with police called to the hotel room at around midnight. The police report surrounding the episode has been released, suggesting Carey became violent when police approached.
“The defendant yelled obscenities and once again I identified ourselves as police officers for the Miami police dept,” a Miami police report said.
“At this point he became aggressive, jumped out of bed and became confrontational towards these officers. The defendant was told to settle down, clam down and please have a seat.
“The defendant continued to say obscenities and pushed this officer.
“I attempted to place the defendant into custody. In the process the defendant elbowed Officer Camilo on the face. The defendant was turned around to his stomach on to the bed and placed into restraints,” the report said.
Carey was subdued with capsicum spray by police after a domestic incident at his Port Melbourne home on Sunday.
