Shane Warne’s magic touch is rubbing off on the Rajasthan Royals, who today beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 45 runs to extend winning streak to four matches. Warne ‘s supreme competitive streak was also on show, evidenced by his run-in with Kolkata captain Sourav Ganguly.
Warne didn’t have a stellar game himself – making 7 with the bat while taking 1 for 20 off his two overs – however his leadership was as sharp as ever as his group of young guns continue to surprise the IPL.
Swapnil Asnodkar (66) and Yusuf Pathan (55) steered Rajasthan to 7/196.
Tensions flared in the chase, when Ganguly asked for a television replay of a catch claimed by Graeme Smith at deep mid wicket. Ganguly survived however his exit for 51 started the rot for Kolkata. Warne was incensed at the inference that Smith wasn’t telling the truth.
“If an international captain like Graeme Smith caught it and said it was a clean catch and Rudi Koertzen said he caught it, easy,” Warne said.
“Anyway, the players aren’t allowed to ask for the umpire. But Sourav asked the Indian umpire to go to the TV replay. That’s not in the spirit of the game so I was very, very disappointed with Sourav.”
Australia’s Shane Watson continued his fruitful IPL, taking 2 for 22 off 3.1 overs. David Hussey scored 42 off 30 balls for the beaten side.
Warne and Ganguly meet again on May 20 at Eden Gardens.
