Waratahs win in wet, again

It sure wasn’t pretty, but the Waratahs reached into their play book from last week to again master the wet, beating the ACT Brumbies 24-17 at Sydney Football Stadium.
A balmy evening quickly became a race for cover among the 32,000 strong crowd, as the Waratahs butchered a 10-nil lead over the decimated Brumbies. The hosts started well enough when Kurtley Beale fooled the defence, feigning a field goal, before slicing through and sending Tom Carter over in the 21st minute. The lead looked set to soar when Brumbies centre Tyrone Smith was yellow carded.
The ensuing penalty extended the gap to double figures, however the Brumbies laid on ten unanswered points in Smith’s absence.
ACT reserve Julian Salvi stunned the Waratahs by going down the blindside out of a scrum to crash over. With the scores locked at 10-all, Peter Playford dived over in the corner on the stroke of half time.
The Waratahs amped up their pressure in the second half, with the results soon following. Nic Henderson spilled a ball in his own half, with Carter tapping the loose ball to an unmarked Lote Tuqiri, who raced 45m to score. The try was instantly awarded, however replays suggested Carter propelled the ball forward.
Brumbies fly-half Christian Lealiifano had a torrid night with the boot, culminating in a charged down kick by Dean Mumm in the 61st minute. The Waratahs reserve forward regathered and showed a clean pair of heels to run untouched for 40m to cross.
The Brumbies never really threatened for the remainder of the contest, however they did hold on to the ball for an extended period once the 80 minutes had expired. They take away one point, while the Tahs move into the Super 14 top four.
