Ben Cousins’ original club East Fremantle is jumping at the chance to throw the fallen star a lifeline in 2008, however the WAFL is not so ready to lay out the red carpet.
Cousins’ next move became a hotly debated topic in Western Australia, with conjecture over the 12 month ban handed out by the AFL commission. While the league admitted it hasn’t prevented Cousins from joining a state league club, heavy hitters were weighing in, all the way of to WA Premier Alan Carpenter.
“The AFL is making a statement about the need for Ben Cousins to get over drug addiction, to get back on the straight and narrow before he resumes his football career,” Carpenter said.
“I should think really that should apply to all levels of the game.”
The WAFL (Western Australian Football League) has also been under whelmed at the prospect of Cousins spending 2008 in their league.
“We’re reviewing the rules at the moment to determine if in fact he is eligible,” said Wayne Bradshaw from the WA football commission on Fox Sports News.
The demand for Cousins signature for next year could be quite lucrative, especially if VFL clubs choose to get in a bidding war, however the East Fremantle Sharks would be the favourites to snare Cousins.
“We consider Ben to be an East Fremantle product. He’s always been held in high esteem here,” said East Fremantle general manager Peter Capes.
“If it was appropriate that he plays football (as part) of his rehabilitation, we’d love to have him at the club.”
