The Beijing dream might not be over for Olyroos keeper Danny Vukovic, despite his striking of the referee in yesterday’s A-League grand final resulting in a fifteen month ban, with six of those months suspended.
The minimum nine month ban means Vukovic cannot play in the A-League until November 24, however the Football Federation is still considering whether the lengthy suspension should also take in national team duty.
The Central Coast keeper reacted angrily to what seemed to be a handball by Newcastle’s James Holland in the Mariners penalty box late in the decider. A penalty would have given Central Coast a chance to send the game into extra time, with the Jets hanging on to win 1-0.
Vukovic struck the arm of referee Mark Shield, immediately realising the seriousness of the situation by voluntarily leaving the arena before Shield raised the red card. The remaining six months of Vukovic’s ban has been suspended for a twelve month period after he returns to the A-League.
Vukovic has seven days to lodge an appeal.
