Vintage McGrath steers Delhi home
A superb opening spell from Glenn McGrath has helped the Delhi Daredevils to a 10 run home win over Bangalore Royal Challengers in the Indian Premier League.
The 38 year old took 4 for 29 and was the difference as Delhi successfully defended its target of 192.
McGrath tore through the Bangalore top order, picking up the wickets of Praveen Kumar, Ross Taylor and Wasim Jaffer to leave the Royal Challengers at 3/48 after five overs.
Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid steadily put on 87 to take the visitors within 58 of victory with 30 balls left. With the match up for grabs, McGrath was brought in to save the day. The Australian duly removed Dravid (38 off 30 balls) with the third delivery of his fourth over.
Kallis top scored for the visitors with 54 – including six four’s and a six - however the South African couldn’t find the big shots when the situation demanded as Bangalore finished on 5/181.
McGrath may be retired from the international scene, but he is as miserly as ever. In his four IPL outings, McGrath has yet to concede thirty runs in an innings. His economy rate is an almost obscene 6.3 runs per over, with his six wickets coming at 16.8.
Earlier, Gautam Gambhir spanked 86 off 54 balls to lead the daredevils to 5/191 off its 20 overs.
Delhi move to a record of 3-1, while Bangalore slip to 1-4.
