Vettori laments missed opportunity

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has lamented a lack of consistency from his side as the Kiwis downfall against England.

The Kiwis won the opening test before conceding the next two, losing the final test in Napier by 121 runs. New Zealand blowing its chance when bowled out for 168 in the first innings, replying to England’s mediocre 253.

“There’s sessions we’ve let slip and therefore we lost the game. We reflect back on our first innings with the bat, it was very disappointing and symptomatic of where we’re at as a team,” Vettori said.

“We’re not up to scratch with the bat.”

“We have to be consistent because our talent’s probably not as high as other teams around the world. At Wellington we that slip for a session, and that hurt us. Here, we let it slip for two sessions with the bat and one with the ball.”

The final test was full of star performances, none more important than Andrew Strauss’ 177 in the second innings.

“He was batting for his career,” Vettori said. “To see a guy stand up like that and put a performance together with a heap of pressure on him, showed a lot of guys in our room what we needed to do. Unfortunately none of us could match it.”
