Verbeek delighted with draw

Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek was glowing with delight with Australia’s against-the-odds goalless draw against China to pick up a crucial World Cup qualifying point.

“We always like to win games, but a draw was the best result,” Verbeek told Fox Sports.

“Exciting game, after the game I can say I’m happy with the point.”

Denying the Chinese a win was clearly Verbeek’s prime objective, hardly surprising given the enormous injury toll. The loss of lone striker Archie Thompson after eight minutes didn’t sway the Socceroos, who created two golden chances to steal a famous victory.

“We had two days preparation. The Chinese had two and a half months preparation. I am very proud of the boys,” Verbeek said.

The Socceroos coach paid special tribute to his midfield, which constantly caused headaches for the hosts.

“Culina, Holman and Bresciano did an unbelievable job running up and down, trying to score goals,” Verbeek told Fox Sports.
