Marion Bartoli eloquently summed up Venus Williams’ domination of Wimbledon shortly after the American claimed he fourth title at the All-England club.

“The world number one on grass is definitely Venus.”

Williams entered her sixth Wimbledon final as the lowest ranked woman to make the decider. Her ranking of 31 belying her standing in women’s tennis, as she crushed a nervous Bartoli, setting the tone by scorching through the opening three games.

Bartoli was determined to savour the moment, frequently waving to the crowd and involved.

Williams had endured a retched time of late, suffering a potential career ending wrist injury. “It’s been a tough road back”.

The win gives Venus six grand slam titles, two behind Serena, who watched the final from the stands.

“Growing up, I always admired Pete Sampras. Serena and I always would always say how much we wanted to win Wimbledon.”
