Venus Williams has beaten third seed Jelena Jankovic in the quarter finals of the US Open, setting up a date with Serena’s conqueror, world number one Justine Henin.

Williams lost the first set but rallied in the second, with the decider playing like a heavyweight boxing contest. Jankovic had the tenacity, but in the end Venus had too much power in her punches, scorching 60 winners in the 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 victory.

Venus acknowledged that seeing Serena exit last night was a motivating factor.

“I was so disappointed. I watched. More than anything, she’s my little sister, so watching her be upset is hard for me,” Williams said.

“I’ve got to play well Friday (against Henin) for her.”

Jankovic will rue several unforced errors in the deciding tie break, eventually losing 7-4.

“She deserved to win. She was better at the end.”
