Tiger takes charge

Tiger Woods has never shot a 59 in a PGA event. Still hasn’t.

Today he gave it as good a shake as he ever has.

Tiger monstered the East Nine front nine at the Tour Championship, shooting an incredible 28. Making it more meritorious is the fact Tiger parred the first three holes. His next six holes went: Birdie, birdie, birdie, birdie, birdie, eagle.

The eagle on nine brought laughter from Tiger and caddie Steve Williams, after the world number one landed a putt from more than 60 feet.

“I was just trying to lag it up there, but it was a bomb,” Tiger said

With the back nine being par-35, Tiger only needed to go four under to become the fourth male to break 60 on the tour.

The heat went out of the round though, with birdies on 15 and 18 countered by bogeys on 12 and 16.

Tiger’s seven under 63 has him -13, three clear of Woody Austin. Tim Clark, Mark Calcavecchia and Adam Scott are at -9.

“Luckily for all of us, he kind of slowed down a little bit and kept a tournament of it,” Scott said.

Tiger’s 127 for the opening 36 holes is his second lowest start to a tournament, however the world number one wasn’t quite enamoured with the ease of the damp greens.

“There’s really no creativity. You don’t have to control your spin.”

After the round, Tiger said he wasn’t thinking about 59.

“I was just trying to make sure I increased my lead on the back nine, which I didn’t do.”

The race for the FedEx Cup is as good as over, with Phil Mickelson -6, Steve Stricker at minus four. Any hope either has of taking the $10 million prize depends on finishing above Tiger this week.

Of the other Aussies, Geoff Ogilvy is -2. Robert Allenby and Aaron Baddeley are -1.
