Tiger only three back

Tiger Woods

Johnathan Byrd, sitting on the final stage bubble in the FedEx playoffs, has scorched the Cog Hill course with eight birdies to lead the BMW Championship at -7 after the first round.

Thirty players will make the Tour championship in Atlanta next week, with Byrd sitting thirtieth entering the BMW.

Justin Rose and Camilo Villegas are one shot back.

Tiger Woods is lurking -4, after firing six birdies as well as an ugly double bogey on 7.

Nathan Green is the leading Australian, tied with Tiger at -4. Aaron Baddeley and Stuart Appleby are at minus three.

Nine Australian’s have made the field of 70, Adam Scott is -2, Nick O’Hern -1, John Senden even par, while Rod Pampling is +2 and Robert Allenby +4.

Geoff Ogilvy had a day he would choose to forget rather quickly. Sitting at +1 after twelve, Ogilvy fired three bogeys and a triple bogey to slump to +7, to sit dead last.

Ogilvy is guaranteed a spot at next week’s championship no matter where he finishes this week.

Phil Mickelson is not here. Last weeks winner withdrew as his running battle with the PGA continues.
