Tiger blitzes field

The records tumbled as Tiger Woods decimated the elite competition at the PGA Tour Championship in Atlanta, winning by eight strokes.

Woods shot a four under 66 today to finish on -23. Tiger’s four round total of 257 was the lowest tally in his grand career.

Tiger started his final round slowly, with no birdies in the first five holes, including a bogey on 2. His lead over Mark Calcavecchia was reduced to two shots.

However Woods put his stamp on the event with a spectacular approach to the par-3 sixth, stopping his tee shot dead, three feet from the pin. Birdies followed on eight and nine and the tournament was over.

When Tiger birdied 16 to go -24, he had one other record in sights - the lowest four round tally in PGA tour history, 254. A bogey on 17 would end that pursuit, with Tiger’s 257 the third lowest in tour history.

“A phenomenal week,” Woods said.

“I was in one of those streaks. My speed was good all week.”

Calcavecchia finished equal second with Zach Johnson at -15, Sergio Garcia was next at -14.

Tiger also wins the FedEx Cup, guaranteeing another $US10 million.

Robert Allenby was the highest placed Australian, finishing -7, leaving him tied for 11th. Geoff Ogilvy was one shot further back and tied for 17th, Aaron Baddeley finished 24th, while Adam Scott had the tournament’s worst round - 78 - to crash to a tie for 26th.

Baddeley finished sixth in the FedEx standings, pocketing $US800,000.

Woods now has 61 career victories, one shy of Arnold Palmer.

“Never would have dreamt this. To have this much success, this early in my career.”
