Thurston faces suspension

Johnathan Thurston

The worst fears of the North Queensland Cowboys have been realised, with halfback Johnathan Thurston hit with a grade one dangerous tackle charge.

The charge carries enough points to keep him out of Saturday night’s preliminary final against Manly, unless he beats the charge at the NRL judiciary.

Thurston tipped Warriors second rower Wairangi Koopu in an awkward tackle during the first half of yesterdays knock out semi final in Townsville. Referee Tony Archer told Thurston the tackle was ‘dangerous’, however the Cowboys half was not placed on report.

Because Thurston had a prior offence in last two years, the 20% loading that brings proved to be crucial. That prevented the possibility of an early guilty plea saving any suspension.

The case is certain to be taken to the judiciary, with Thurston in danger of being suspended for more than one week if he fights the charge and loses.
