The Serve Grill: Michael O’Connor

Mick O'Connor. Old picture, same nose.

Wallabies selector Michael O’Connor has been embarrassed by revelations that he rubbished Waratahs fullback Peter Hewat with Hewat’s teammates listening in. As a result, Hewat has asked for a release. The Serve gets to the bottom of it.

TS: Michael O’Connor, thanks for joining us.

MOC: Oh no problem. Not a problem at all. What a great week, eh?

TS: Great week?

MOC: Fantastic week. Been fifteen years since I played and Michael O’Connor is on the back pages. Still got it baby!

TS: Yes, very good. However you made the back pages by rubbishing Waratahs fullback Peter Hewat. Why don’t you like him?

MOC: Look, it’s not personal, Pete’s a nice guy. It’s just when he’s had some pressure kicks at the end of games, he has a habit of botching them. If there’s anyone who knows about pressure, its good old Snoz, like in the second origin game in 91. Remember it? Driving rain, game tied, and the old boy landed the conversion from the sideline. Nailed it.

TS: Um, sure. Why were you talking to Lote Tuqiri about team selections?

MOC: Well, it’s part of Lote’s new role.

TS: What role is that?

MOC: Oh, you haven’t heard? Lote’s new deal means we have to ask his permission before making any major ecision. I thought it was a strange concession for the ARU to give him, but in all honesty, $6 million on its own was probably never enough. He’s a proven match winner, so what are you going to do? If there’s anyone that knows about match winners, it’s the guy who won an origin off his own….

TS: …Yeah, we get it. Are you disappointed that some of your responsibilities as Wallabies selector have been taken away?

MOC: Best news I’ve had in ages. How would you like to come up with a decent test side from that lot?

TS: Fair point. What do you have to say about your phone call being heard by most of the Waratahs players?

MOC: Well, it least it had a bigger audience than The Hard Yards.

TS: Thanks for your time.

MOC: ‘O’Connor has won the second state of origin for New South Wales.’ Go Rabs.
