The Interview: Tadhg Kennelly (Page 3)

When you turned up here, how many of the boys wanted to drink the Irishman under the table?

A few of them had a crack, but I’ve had none yet to actually do it. I must be the number one at the club. And I have been for a few years. A bit disappointing really, the challenges that have been put up to me. I’m still waiting. Want to have a crack?

Me? Not in your league, Tadhg. A few Vodka and Orange’s and I’m finished.

Vodka and Orange? Micky O’Loughlin is a Vodka and Orange man.

You a Guinness man?

Yeah I am. I love it. It’s changed at home. Now the kids have those Strongbow type drinks, those alcoholic ciders. I grew up with Guinness, from the age of 6!

Is it different here?

Yeah it is. Extremely. It’s quite funny, but it’s colder in Ireland.

Fan of any Aussie beer?

Crown Lager. Love it.

Not a VB man?

Nah. Who are we sponsored by? Carlton Draught? I love Carlton Draught!

How long have you got left on your contract?

Two years..

And that’s it? Going home?

Straight home. Going to play Gaelic Football for Kerry and try to win an All-Ireland premiership. That’s the plan.

One last question, and this is the most important. Is Scruffy Murphy’s (a notorious pub in Sydney’s CBD) a fair reflection of Ireland?

Depends what time of the night you go to Scruffy Murphys! Ha Ha. You go at 4am and it’s extremely close to Dublin. There’s some good Irish Pubs in Sydney, but Scruffy’s is not my normal haunt!
