The Interview: Anthony Mundine (Page 3)

There are people that think this is a stunt.
For those people, all I can say is….I don’t care what they say. The professors know what I went through, the doctors know what I went through. The people that are close to me and saw me on a daily basis know what I went through. You can’t get much worse than having to lose an eye. They thought I was going to lose it. For people to even think (that this is a stunt), is ridiculous.
I know what the truth is. It’s going to be remarkable for just to step back in the ring and fight top fighters, with this impairment, that I’ll have for life, probably.
Boxers are known for having a lot of hangers on. Did they drop off when you were stuck in hospital?
I never really had any hangers on. My family were around me, every day, supporting me, whether it was being by my bedside, on the phone, or bringing me chocolate. I’m pretty intelligent towards certain situations and I know who is real and who isn’t.
Was your father pissed off that you let yourself get into this situation?
Yeah. Probably. I think I was (pissed off) even more. But you can’t turn back time. It’s pre-destined. I had to come through this. It tought me a lot. Given me a lot more inner strength, mentally.
This is for the better.
How long couldn’t you train for?
I was in hospital for six weeks. I haven’t trained for about three months. Just started training now.
How is that to deal with, when you’re lying on a bed, withering away?
It’s pretty hard. I just felt worthless.
(It) brought me closer to my creator, just to show how weak, how fickle we are as human beings.
Three months of doing nothing. Does that have an impact, long term?
I doubt it. I’ve already got the runs on the board. I’ve been training since I was 12 or 13 years old. In the last seven years I’ve been boxing. There’s about 250,000 kilometres in my legs. That can’t be taken away. Not that quickly.
