Tensions flare in Adelaide between Ponting and Harbhajan

Ricky Ponting and Harbhajan Singh, two of the key players in the controversial Sydney test which saw the Indian off-spinner suspended for three tests, pending appeal, have had a heated exchange late on day three of the Adelaide test, prompting umpire Asad Rauf to step in.The incident occurred when Harbhajan was bowling to Michael Clarke. Clarke played a stroke to the on-side, with Singh moving towards the ball to field. He came into slight contact with Ponting. Replays indicate the pair exchanged words, with Ponting staring at Harbhajan, before making eye contact with umpire Rauf. Indian paceman Irfan Pathan walked across from mid-off, clearly giving Ponting a verbal. This led to Rauf walking towards Pathan, motioning him away. By then Singh had walked away from Ponting, with the exchange closed.Ordinarily an incident like that would barely raise an eyebrow, however given the recent history between the two teams, the exchange was attention worthy. Ponting reported Harbhajan for an alleged racial comment during the Sydney test, sparking days of chaos which at one point led to the Indian tour being cancelled.

The state of the match may have contributed to the tension, with Australia delicately poised at 3 for 282 in reply to India’s 526.
