Sydney league fans set a new low

Six days away from State Of Origin II, and over 10,000 seats remain unsold. Sydney people gets one chance this year and they have managed to set a horrible benchmark, even for them.
It was easy for talkback hosts in 2006 to rile up the masses and opine at this great town being denied its God given right to have a second origin game, because officials had the temerity to promote the game in an AFL stronghold.
Hard to make a case now, huh?
Television numbers confirm that at least a million Sydney people will tune in. The interest is not waning, so why are ticket sales? Sure, the fans don’t like Homebush, but that would be too easy an answer. Bledisloe tests or league grand finals manage to fill the cavernous ground, so why shouldn’t Origin?
Perhaps Sydney people are too good to get on the train in the middle of the week. Too much pride to go anywhere west of Darling Harbour and mix with the great unwashed. This indifference is staggering. This is the cities biggest event in its biggest sport.
Speaking of the great unwashed, come Wednesday, there may be a noticeable stench at Telstra Stadium.
The stench of people with free tickets.
Sydney should never again get two origins in a series. Melbourne is due for another serving in 2010. That should be brought forward to next year, and every second year when New South Wales has two home matches at its disposal.
What’s the difference? Watching a match from Telstra Dome or Telstra Stadium would seem the same from any Sydney person’s lounge room.
