Swans fined 50k for extra man
The Sydney Swans have been slammed with a $50,000 fine – half of it suspended- for fielding a nineteenth player in the dying stages of their dramatic draw with North Melbourne on the weekend, however the Swans will keep the two competition points.
A league investigation found that Sydney had an extra man for thirty seconds, with rookie Jesse White re-entering the game before Darren Jolly left the arena.
“While we consider the $50,000 sanction to be severe we accept the decision of the AFL,” Sydney Swans Chief Executive Myles Baron-Hay said.
“It was an honest mistake by a young player having his first game but despite his presence on the field as an additional player there was absolutely no impact on the end result.
“The spare man was deep in defence and the play for the period in question was in the Swans forward line.”
The AFL maintained they could have stripped Sydney of its competition points, however they were comfortable that the incident was accidental, while also taking into consideration the lack of consternation from the Kangaroos.
Half of the fine has been suspended for 24 months.
