Storm rout Titans in perfect finals lead up
The Melbourne Storm have put the Gold Coast Titans out of their misery for 2007, with a 50-6 demolition in a performance that will not please the rest of the teams contesting the NRL finals.
The Storm showed no mercy against a Titans side that clearly looked flat after the disappointment of being knocked out of finals contention the week before.
Melbourne were sharp from the opening, with Ryan Hoffman crashing over in the fifth. This was quickly followed by tries to Steve Turner, Cooper Cronk and Anthony Quinn. The Storm led 22-nil after 25 minutes and threatened to break all sorts of records, until the fizz went out of the contest.
The Storm laid on a spectacular finish, starting with Israel Folau’s club record 21 st try, with Michael Crocker and Billy Slater topping the night off and giving Melbourne its second half-century of the season.
Melbourne reserve Michael Crocker may have a sleepless night ahead after being involved in a lifting tackle in the second half.
After the game, a presentation was held in honour of Melbourne’s consecutive minor premiership, as well as Matt King, who is departing for the English super league.
