Storm outlasts Warriors

A lone try to Jeremy Smith in the 71st minute was enough to send the Melbourne Storm to the top of the table and the Warriors to a sixth consecutive defeat.

On a weekend where the wet has been the overriding factor, conditions in Auckland were not exactly on a par with Sydney, however conditions were damp, windy and cold enough to justify the lack of attack on show.

With nine regular first graders missing from Melbourne, The Warriors were dominant in the first half, constantly pressing the Storm line. Melbourne’s desperation kept the home side at bay and became a source of frustration for Warriors coach Ivan Cleary. “They wrestled the life out of us”.

With the odds of a try-less match shortening quickly, Smith’s try was fitting. A simple case of barging over from close to the line.

Melbourne once again over take Manly, who had the bye.

“Real gutsy” was the succinct assessment from Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy. “Can’t give a big enough rap for their resilience”.
