Steffenson misses 400 final

John Steffenson

Australia’s John Steffensen has faded in the final 80 metres of his 400 metre semi final, to just miss the final at the world championships in Osaka.

In a cruel blow, the scoreboard originally posted Steffensen among the top eight qualifiers. The glitch was rectified, with the Australia’s time of 44.95 only good enough for the ninth best time, 0.09 shy of a spot in the final.

Steffenson was leading midway through the final bend, however he was quickly overtaken by American LaShawn Merritt, who cruised home in 44.31. The Australian finished the third and final semi in fourth place.

“I gave it my best. It’s been a good year. I’ll come back next year,” Steffensen told SBS before quickly vacating the interview area.

Fellow Australian Sean Wroe finished fifth in his semi final, running a personal best of 45.25.

Meantime, Patrick Johnson is out of the 200m after finishing last in his semi final.
