Sri Lanka giving target a shake

A victory target of 507 has never been run down in test cricket, however Sri Lanka’s Marvan Atapattu and Kumar Sangakkara are giving the tourists a glimmer of hope in the final session of day 4 at Bellerive Oval.

Sri Lanka is 1 for 154, with Atapattu 77 and Sangakkara 58. the current run rate is 3.16, roughly the required rate with 111 more overs scheduled.

Michael Vandort is the batsman out, caught wofting a pull shot off Mitchell Johnson. The catch was taken by local substitute Rhett Lockyear, who also affected a run out in the first innings.

Atapattu and Sangakkara have 12 double centuries between them in world cricket, while Mahela Jayawardene is in form following his century in the first innings.

Earlier Australia declared at 2 for 210, Phil Jaques top scoring with 68, while Ricky Ponting remained unbeaten on 53 and Mike Hussey added 34 not out, elevating his test average to 86.2.
