Sri Lanka crashes quickly
Sri Lanka’s bold bid for a world record victory over Australia in the second test at Hobart has crashed, with the visitors losing five wickets in just over an hour.
Chasing 507, Sri Lanka has fallen to 8 for 302.
Resuming at 3 for 247, the first wicket of the day would be the most important, and Sanath Jayasuriya was caught behind off Lee in the fifth over of the day for 45.
The wheels fell off quickly.
Chamara Silva lasted nine balls before falling to Mitchell Johnson, who found himself on a hat-trick when he trapped keeper Prasanna Jayawardene for a golden duck.
Injured paceman Farveez Maharoof hung around for a while, before skying a mediocre Stuart MacGill delivery straight to Lee for 4.
Fernando was run out for 2 when chasing a third run off his first ball. Local substitute Rhett Lockyer fired a return from the boundary, with Brett Lee breaking the stumps. The umpire imstantly raised his finger, however replays indicate Lee may have broken the stumps first with his empty left hand, which should have deemed the run out void.
Kumar Sangakkara has watched the collapse helplessly from other end and is not out on 146. Lee and Johnson have three wickets each, while MacGill has shown little improvement, despite his wicket.
The weather in Hobart is overcast, with showers developing later in the day. However it should not arrive in time to rain on Australia’s victory march.
