Souths hang on to get off mark

Never doubt the influence of Russell Crowe. The Hollywood star was in attendance at ANZ Stadium today, with South Sydney beating a lethargic North Queensland Cowboys 28-24 to clinch its first win of the season.

The Rabbitohs shook off another shocking week of headlines by laying on five tries. John Sutton capped a superb weekend by producing arguably his best performance in two seasons. The Souths’ lock carried his good from from Friday’s City v Country game, scoring two tries.

Souths led 18-12 at half time and 28-18 with seven minutes remaining. A converted try to John Williams gave the small crowd a twitchy finish, however visitors lacked the polish to pressure the Rabbitohs in the dying moments.
