South Africa win twenty20 opener

South Africa

The Proteas have cruised to an eight wicket win over the West Indies in the first match of the Twenty20 World Championship in Johannesburg, with fourteen balls to spare.

Chris Gayle slammed the first century in twenty20 internationals, finishing with 117 off 56 balls, including ten sixes. West Indies set the hosts 206 to win.

A combination of measured batting, woeful fielding and even worse bowling were the keys to South Africa’s chase. Herschelle Gibbs made an unbeaten 90 off 55, Justin Kemp 46 not out off 22, however they were helped along by their opponents.

The Windies delivered an astonishing 23 wides, more than one per over, while dropping several catches, including Gibbs on 20 and again on 43.
