Slow starting Manly beat Bulldogs
Manly has recovered from a shock start to beat the Bulldogs 30-22 at Brookvale Oval.
Having won four of its last five matches at Brookvale, the Bulldogs appeared on track for another triumph at Manly’s home, jumping out of the gates with tries to winger Heka Nanai and Sonny-Bill Williams in the opening fifteen minutes.
With the Sea Eagles struggling, the momentum switched when Nanai spilled possession from the restart at 10-nil. Manly had a try disallowed before finally capitalising on a torrent of Bulldogs errors, with Glenn Stewart barging over in the 24th minute. A try to Steven Bell three minutes later left the half time score locked at 10-all.
Manly lifted in the second half, with Brett Stewart crossing for his 45th try in 46 Brookvale appearances. The incumbent Australian fullback was dynamic in his final game before the side for the Centenary test is selected tomorrow night.
Tries to Glenn Hall (55th minute) and Adam Cuthbertson (60th minute) killed off the contest, with a Matt Orford penalty goal extending Manly’s run to thirty unanswered points. The Bulldogs shrunk the margin with tries to Tim Winitana and debutant Brent Crisp in the final ten minutes. Crisp’s spectacular catch and put down near the touch-in-goal line capped off a fine debut. The fullback was a late replacement for Luke Patten.
