A late Waratahs charge wasn’t enough to end their Hamilton drought, with a late penalty giving the Waikato Chiefs a 20-17 victory in a scrappy Super 14 match.
In an uninspiring match in front of an uninspiring crowd, the match only roared to life when Waratahs pair Ben Jacobs and Lote Tuqiri crossed in the 73rd and 75th minutes, leaving the match locked at 17-17. Despite entering the match as overwhelming favourites, the visitors would surely have settled for a draw, given their disappointing performance. That possibility was snuffed out quickly, when the Chiefs were handed a penalty within range. Stephen Donald’s 79th minute attempt was good.
The Waratahs have not won in Hamilton since 2002.
The Tahs can only blame themselves for losing, with too many errors committed, while they showed little imagination in attack. The currency gained from last weeks impressive win over the Hurricanes vanished into the Hamilton night.
