Slim ain’t for Origin

Slim Dusty. Great man. Quintessential Australian. Iconic. Legend.
Not for State Of Origin.
What a wonderful half hour the fans were treated to before the hand to hand combat of Origin league. A collection of laid back country songs that had nothing to do with what was about to transpire. Ironically, by the time The Pub With No Beer rang around Telstra Stadium, the beer lines were at record levels.
IT brought back memories of the Blues debut at Telstra Stadium. 1999. The anticipation of the biggest Sydney Origin crowd in a brand new venue. Such a buzz. Then came Neil Diamond’s Song Sung Blue over the P.A.
Buzz gone.
It’s amazing how badly a pre match show can be stuffed up. When the NRL went to night time grand finals in 2001, out came the rock bands. Perfect. Turn the lights down, turn the music up and the fans loved it. Even if Billy Idol had no power. Barnsey, INXS, Grinspoon. Why steer away from that now?
The game was not a sellout. As we’ve touched on previously on The Serve, a less than full house is nothing short of a disgrace. Despite the standing of the event, it is not marketed. Do you hear ads for it on the radio? Or see commercials on TV?
Such apathy from the organizers has bred the same indifference amongst its customers.
However, there was one positive to having a half hour Slim Dusty show.
It wasn’t a Guy Sebastian show.
