Six weeks for gouging nowhere near enough

Jeff Farmer might count himself unfortunate. Being accused and then suspended for an eye gouge is perhaps the most heinous charge in sport. The vision appeared to show him looking away from Daniel Pratt when fingers entered the eye socket of the Kangaroo’s youngster. He had a case. However he was found guilty.
Farmer is the luckiest man in the competition. Six weeks for gouging is an appalling punishment. Had he not contested the charge he would have copped four. One month for threatening the eye sight of an opponent. AFL is known for light punishments when compared to other codes, but this is ridiculous, especially when you consider Byron Pickett was given six weeks for a hip and shoulder gone wrong. Gouging? Hip and Shoulder? Don’t have a lot in common, do they?
Neither should the penalties.
