Sharks end year with a win

It won’t go down in the annals of rugby league, but Cronulla’s 22-12 win over Canberra will at least ensure the Sharks players had an enjoyable bus trip back to Sydney, before Mad Monday celebrations begin.

Canberra started on the right note, when Scott Logan crossed in the fifth minute. However, Cronulla scored the next four tries, including a double to Luke Covell, who finished with 14 points.

There were fireworks in the match, when Eddie Su’a form the Sharks and Raiders five eighth Terry Campese came to blows.

“We go into next season with a bit more optimism,” said Ricky Stuart.

“If we were as good as this today, halfway through the year, we would have won a lot more of the tight games we were involved in.”

If Brisbane loses to Parramatta tomorrow, the Sharks will finish the season just two points outside the eight.

The Raiders finish the season in 14th place, winning just three of their last twelve minutes.

“They out-enthused us,” said a perplexed coach Neil Henry.

“It’s the same problem we’ve had every week - our error rate and completions.”
