It started with an ace. Casey Dellacqua’s first adventure with the big guns on the big stage was off to a flyer.
From there: Not so good.
The intimidating bright lights, and the even more intimidating Maria Sharapova were too much for Casey Dellacqua, who lost 1-6, 0-6 in the second round of the US Open.
The best moment of the match for the Australian came in the sixth game in the first set. After just winning her first game, Dellacqua had Sharapova 0-40. The Russian would save all of those break points and ruthlessly end the match in 51 minutes.
“Well I’ve never played her before, so I figured the faster I started to figure out what she does best, the quicker the match will be,” Sharapova said.
“I saw a couple of matches she played in Australia, but this is a different tournament. You can’t really look back.”
Sharapova showed no signs of the shoulder injury that plagued her preparation for the tournament.
“It’s holding up.”
