Shane still the sultan of spin
It’s never Shane’s fault. A lesson that keeps on keeping on. This time it’s the media’s fault that Shane and his great friend, apparently, Murali, had a lovers tiff.
Well, Shane is part of the media now, so he’s somewhat accurate.
Let’s take a journey down hypocritical avenue, and judge for ourselves whether Shane’s column in the News Limited papers on Tuesday was blown out of proportion.
Tuesday: “Speaking of Murali, I agree with Terry Jenner that he should be tested under match conditions.”
Thursday: “I’ve got absolutely no issue with Murali and his action, or anything like that.”
Hmmm.
Thursday: “All I said in my column, that I wrote, that common sense should prevail, if the umpires, or anybody think (sic) that has any issue with, um, an action - I’m not saying Murali before you all jump the gun - I was saying anyone in world cricket, should be tested in match conditions.”
Tuesday: “I think for his own peace of mind and everyone in world cricket, do the testing in the heat of battle — a Test match. Surely the ICC, Sri Lanka and Murali would want that.”
Pretty direct stuff. No mention of ‘anyone in world cricket’ in that Tuesday piece, was there?
Oh, one thing Shane wants to make clear is he wrote the column himself.
“All I said in my column, that I wrote.”
Glad we cleared that up.
This Hobart lovefest was sickly. Murali was weaving his own spin as well, claiming his firey retort that Shane is ‘miserable’ was a simple miscommunication. We were treated to stories of the Tsunami, of Warney handing out pencils and colouring books. No mention of the 60 Minutes PR piece that at one stage relegated Murali to sitting in the car for hours while Warney was getting it right for the camera.
The thing is if Shane believes Murali is a chucker, why not say so? Why go into denial mode and play the blame game?
Tuesday’s gentle sparring was pathetic, but today’s effort took the cake.
