Serena up a set on Vaidisova

Serena Williams is on track to move into the Australian Open quarter finals, with the defending champion taking the first set against 12th seed Nicole Vaidisova.

The Czech has largely competed with the seven-time slam champion, however a loose game in the eighth game allowed Williams to break and take the set 6-3.

Vaidisova had two break opportunites of her own in the murky conditions on Rod Laver Arena, missing both.

In the previous contests between the pair, Vaidisova has failed to win a set.

The winner will take on either 3rd seed Jelena Jankovic or unseeded Australian Casey Dellacqua in the quarters.
