Selectors impressed by Jaques ton
Australian cricket selector Merv Hughes hasn’t quite anointed Phil Jaques as the man to fill Justin Langer’s opening spot in the first test team against Sri Lanka, however he was impressed by Jaques’ belligerent century against WA in Perth.
“Obviously you want to see players in form,” Hughes told Fox Sports News from the WACA.
“At the end of the day, everything is performance.
“Jaques has taken his opportunity”
Mike Hussey has been mooted as a potential opener, despite his test average of over 89 when he hasn’t opened the batting for Australia.
If Hussey is not switched to the top of the order, Jaques and WA’s Chris Rogers, both recent contract winners with Cricket Australia, are vying for the vacant slot. While Jaques staked his claim with 167, Rogers failed in both innings against the Blues, making 9 and 16.
“One of those two may play the first test match in Brisbane, or neither of them will play,” Hughes said.
“The thing we’ve got on our side, as selectors, is time.”
In reality, that time is limited to one more serious hit out for Rogers and Jaques. Both play in Pura Cup games the week before the first test.
