Sam Kekovich: End draws now
I don’t care whether we have an extra five minutes each way, have a penalty shootout or even grab the coaches out of the box and get them to have a shootout, we must not have draws in AFL.
Closure is terribly important. If we’re going to play for 120 minutes, surely we can devise a system - like every other code – where we can break a deadlock. It’s imperative that we have a set of fans that are victorious, while the vanquished can go and get stuffed.
We’re not renowned for sharing the pie. We enjoy the spoils. That’s the way we’re raised in this country. This is not a handicap event.
Sydney can count themselves terribly unlucky not to get all four points against the Kangaroos, even though the Swans used a nineteenth man. More on that later. However it is unacceptable that we haven’t got technology available to sort out whether a goal is a goal, such as Brett Kirk’s shot in the dying stages.
What would it cost to stick a camera in line with the goals at either end? The ramifications are too critical to not get it right. Clubs are spending upwards of $20 million a year and fighting for survival. How long would it take to get right? Ten seconds? There are enough anomalies and irregularities in our game as it is. It’s crucial the outcome is not clouded. Not good enough.
As for the extra man, I’m sure Sydney didn’t purposely transgress, as they were clearly trying to effect a rotation. The execution was obviously poor, but that execution should have been monitored by the AFL.
Clearly someone didn’t do their job.
