Rogers savages Souths for alcohol axing
The mood within the South Sydney club has sunk to a new low, with axed five-eighth Ben Rogers speaking out about the alcohol ban which has seen he along with three teammates removed from first grade this week, while David Kidwell lost a share of the captaincy.
The Rabbitohs lost their seventh game on the trot on Friday night, with the players agreeing not to drink after the game. When the breathalysers were pulled out at Saturday morning’s recovery session, five players – including Rogers - delivered a positive result. Rogers unleashed in an interview with The Daily Telegraph.
“If I’d gotten into trouble, got kicked out of a pub or started a fight, then I’d put my hand up and say I was in the wrong,” Rogers told the News Limited publication.
“That would be fair enough. But I wasn’t drunk. I’m not real impressed and Souths know I’m not happy.”
“What, are we in the army?” Rogers asked.
There are rumours some players are unhappy that Kidwell was selected for this week’s match against North Queensland, despite his positive reading. However Rogers is upset that the giant Kiwi was stripped of the captaincy.
“They took the captaincy off David Kidwell over this. I find it hard to fathom.
“He (Kidwell) wasn’t with us. He was having a few beers with his family. Why can’t we have a beer? That’s what I’m upset about.
“I was with Jaiman Lowe’s family having a few beers at a pub. His cousins were there with his mum and his aunty,” Rogers said.
Dean Widders will play in Rogers’ five-eighth position against the Cowboys.
