Roddick pips Davydenko

Andy Roddick has kicked off his Masters Cup in Shanghai with a gritty three set win over Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

In the most evenly matched contest of the round robin series, 5th ranked Roddick was under siege in the first set, however the American staved off four break points and found a way through the Russian’s serve to take an early lead.

Davydenko, who has been the focus of match-fixing suspicions, fought back in the second as Roddick’s serve became less dependable. The Russian finally won a break point to send the match into a deciding set.

The third set was barely a contest as Roddick tightened up his first serve and had little trouble with Davydenko’s, breaking twice.

Roddick, who is grouped with Roger Federer, can almost certainly book his place in the semi finals with a win over 7th ranked Fernando Gonzalez.

Roddick is 5-0 against Davydenko.
