Roddick crushes Gonzalez in opening set

The Fernando Gonzalez that scorched past Roger Federer on Monday has so far failed to turn up at the Shanghai arena tonight, dropping the first set to a rampant Andy Roddick 6-1.

Roddick, 1-0 for the tournament after beating Nikolay Davydenko in his first match, monstered Gonzalez with a dominant serve, while the Chilean struggled on his, winning just four points in his first two service games to concede a double break.

Tonight’s winner won’t necessarily be guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals, however it would take a horrible run of luck for the victor not to advance to the final four.
