Australia’s Adam Gilchrist has spoken publicly for the first time since his sudden decision to retire from international cricket, midway through the Adelaide test against India.
Speaking to Channel Nine before play on day four, Gilchrist revealed he knew his time was up on Thursday, after the first day of the test.“I feel great, really happy.”“Seeing the amazing response from so many friends, family, supporters, opponents, it’s been unbelievable.”
Gilchrist called his parents on Friday night, urging them to travel to Adelaide for the conclusion of the test, because he had decided this test would be his last.
“Probably even the night before that.”
A Thursday decision coincides with one of Gilchrist’s unhappiest moments in the baggy green, dropping a sitter off VVS Laxman. The grassed chance sparked renewed calls for the 96 test veteran to draw stumps on his legendary career.
“I thought about discussing it with a lot of people, past players to find out what they went through,” Gilchrist said.
“But I just knew”
The Channel Nine interview was conducted by former Australian keeper Ian Healy, with an observation Healy made during the commentary of this test striking a chord with Gilchrist.
“I did hear you comment that it’s hard for a keeper, once he’s made a mistake, to prove that he’s got it right again. A dismissal chance might not come for another test, and even then you need to take a ‘speccy’ for people to take notice.”
The fourth test is precariously placed, with Gilchrist’s innings potentially of great importance.
“We’ve got a big job to do. Michael Clarke has been asking me ‘am I going to bat carefree?’, but no, it’s still the same. Hopefully I can channel all my energies into that.”
Gilchrist’s family has congregated in Adelaide for test farewell, however one member is missing.“I’ve got one brother who’s camping in the middle of Queensland. He’s out of phone range. So, if anyone sees Glen my brother, track him down, he doesn’t know yet! I’d love him be here.”
