Ponting: We are not respecting the game

Ricky Ponting

> Australia beaten by Zimbabwe

Australian captain Ricky Ponting held nothing back as he picked apart his side’s shock Twenty20 world championship loss to Zimbabwe.

“We’ve been ouplayed today, there’s no doubt about that.”

“(It) might wake a few of us up,” Ponting said.

The loss was always a possibility once Zimbabwe had made a mess of the Australian top order, holding the test and one day champions to 3 for 19.

“(The) top order batting, even in the practice games, has been diabolical. Today it was the same. You can’t afford to get off to those starts.”

“I think it’s just a mental thing.”

In the lead up to the tournament, several Australian players, including Adam Gilchrist and Andrew Symonds, had questioned the need for a world championship in the modified form of the game.

“We’ve just got to start respecting the game a bit more, I think. Thinking a bit more about what we have to do,” Ponting said.

“I dont think we did that today.”
