Australia is 3 for 366 after almost an hour of the penultimate day, 162 behind. 44 runs have been scored today, with Ponting 100 and Michael Clarke 57. The pair have added 125.
Ponting ground out his one of his most patient triple figure scores, his first since last year’s Adelaide test against England. The century came off 183 balls, with a relatively low 8 boundaries struck. Ponting was noticeably muted when he reached his ton, knowing his work is far from complete if Australia is to push for an unlikely victory.
Ponting’s 34th ton takes him to equal second on test cricket’s all-time list of century makers. The 33 year old is level with India’s Sunil Gavaskar and recently retired West Indies star Brian Lara, with Sachin Tendulkar heading the list with 39 centuries.
