Ponting out, Australia within 60
India has finally taken its first wicket of day four of the Adelaide test, with a hampered Ricky Ponting dismissed as Australia move into a position where only they can win.
Australia is 4 for 466 shortly after lunch, a deficit of just 60. It would appear the only way a result could be achieved is if India collapse in their second innings.
The Australian skipper was bowled by part-time off-spinner Virender Sehwag for 140. Ponting required a runner after sustaining a leg injury near lunch and struggled with his strokeplay once hurt.
Michael Clarke registered his second century of the summer (first v India), with his innings carefully compiled against steady, although un-penetrating bowling.
Ponting and Clarke added 210 runs.
Clarke is 106 not out, Andrew Symonds 7. The retiring Adam Gilchrist is due to bat next.
Ponting’s 34th ton leaves him level with Sunil Gavaskar and Brian Lara on the all time list of test century makers. Only Sachin Tendulkar, with 39 triple figure scores, stands ahead of Ponting.
