Pietersen slams Zimbabwe

Kevin Pietersen

A stellar innings by Kevin Pietersen has ensured England did what Australia couldn’t do yesterday at the Twenty20 World Championship - beat Zimbabwe.

Pietersen blasted 79 runs off 41 as England rollicked along to 9/188 of their 20 overs. Pietersen had good support from skipper Paul Collingwood, who contributed 37 off 28.

Elton Chigumbura was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 31.

Zimbabwe chased down 138 yesterday and started sprightly against England, Brendan Taylor and Vusi Sibanda producing an opening stand of 74 in 8.4 overs. Once Sibanda went for 29(25), the wheels fell off quickly.

The Africans slumped from 0/74 to 5/89 in thirty balls. Dimitri Mascarenhas ripped the heart out of the top order, finishing with 3 for 18 off 4.

Zimbabwe spluttered to 7/138, losing by 50 runs.

Taylor followed his 60 against the Aussies with 47 off 39 today.

England will play Australia tomorrow. An Australian win will almost certainly knock out Zimbabwe, however an English win would see off the test and one day world champions.
