Perfect Waratahs go into Super 14 with confidence

A trial match in heaving rain is hardly the appropriate setting for revenge, however Ewen McKenzie would have taken pleasure in beating Robbie Deans, the man who recently pipped him for the Wallabies job, with the Waratahs overrunning the Canterbury Crusaders 24-14 to win the Rotomahana challenge at the SFS.

The Crusaders led 14-0 late in the first half, before a Kurtley Beale inspired fightback saw New South Wales pile on all of their points in a 23 minute burst.

The Waratahs fly half stamped his presence on the game with a sensational steal off Caleb Ralph, running 35 metres to score and give the home side a lead they would not surrender.

League recruit Timana Tahu also showed positive signs, setting up Alfi Mafi’s try to close the scoring in the 58th minute.

The Waratahs, 13th in the 2007 Super 14 competition, end the pre-season with a 3-0 record.
